Are Imperial ShihTzus good family pets?
Yes they are. They really enjoy being in the home and love to be in company with their family. Little children need to be educated about treating puppies kindly, so need close parental supervision at the start. This is not the dog for you if you are going to be out of the house for most of the day as they may become anxious. They are sensitive little dogs that thrive on lots of company and attention. If introducing an Imperial ShihTzu to a family where you already have pets it would be good to think about how will integrate them.
Some of our puppies have graduated from puppy school and have their certificates to prove it!

What is an Imperial ShihTzu?
A ShihTzu is in fact a utility dog. This means they were originally bred to guard the temples in China. They are very good little watchdogs. The benefit of owing an Imperial ShihTzu is that unlike the standard ShihTzu they are shorter on the body and weigh less. This means they are easier to handle and are happy to sit on your lap with you. They generally live for 10 – 16 years and their average life span is 12-13 years.

Do Imperial ShihTzus shed a lot of fur?
ShihTzus do not have fur, they have hair. This means they need to be groomed regularly – every 6-8 weeks to look their best, but you will not find all your furniture and carpets covered with their hair.
